A study from the World Institute of Kimchi ran a study comparing the consumption of powdered kimchi (!) vs. placebo. They found that the subjects consuming the kimchi powder, lost between 600-900 grams of weight (depending on the specific formulation of bacteria), whereas those taking a placebo gained
about 1.2 kg over the span of 12 weeks.
This freeze-dried, powdered preparation of the kimchi excludes the beneficial effects of the dietary fiber on digestion and focuses on the bacteria, which remain alive. Therefore, the weight loss effects are interpreted in the context of the bacterial diversity in the gut and its bilateral interaction with the weight loss.
